The scary door

Let's check out the crawlspace! You can only access it through this hatch that was hidden under a rug.

It's a bit unusual, but there's no insulation in the floors. There are floor joists and floor boards, and later someone's added fibreboard and masonite. Perhaps to make the floors less drafty? I believe this type of foundation is called multapenkki in Finnish, literally "soil bench".  The crawlspace would not have been ventilated, but insulated with soil to keep the cold out.

There is some decay on the floor joists. The flooring system will need to be repaired by professionals as soon as possible.

I had to check the vents, and one of them was partially blocked. Fungi don't like drafty spaces, so I cleared it out.

This is what the vent looks like from the inside.

The foundation has a thin concrete shell that's a later addition. It's attracting moisture so it will have to go.

Inside the crawlspace, you can see the foundation is built with large stones, it's not originally concrete.

I still need to plan the renovation with professionals. The foundation and floor system are clearly problematic at the moment, there needs to be less moisture.
